Digital transformation in waste management is a growing focus in Vietnam, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City. The city is making efforts to promote digital transformation in the collection, treatment, and management of the large volume of domestic solid waste discharged daily. Many experts consider the application of advanced technologies of the fourth industrial revolution in waste collection, treatment, and management as an optimal solution to upgrade the city’s waste management model, improve efficiency in domestic waste management, and save operating costs.

One of the key players in this digital transformation is the GRAC Technology Joint Stock Company with their GRAC software. The software provides digital management tools for waste collection units and authorities, and also includes a mobile app for residents. This app allows users to track the location of garbage trucks, view collection schedules, and send complaints and feedback directly to authorities and waste collection units.

In addition to GRAC, an Asian Development Bank-supported study has explored technological solutions for addressing the plastic pollution problem in Asia, focusing on Vietnam. The study selected three digital applications with the highest potential for development and scale-up based on their ability to involve all key stakeholders, including the informal waste sector, their functionality, accessibility, user experience, and impact on the circular economy in the country.

These digital transformations in waste management hold great promise for the future of waste management in Vietnam.
