Grac and plastic waste in Vietnam

The Grac company has implemented an intelligent and efficient plastic waste collection model in Vietnam. Here are some details about how this model works:

  • Grac Application: The Grac company has developed the Grac application, an intelligent waste management application, which digitizes the household waste collection network and allows online payments.
  • Connection with Scrap Dealers: Residents can easily and quickly schedule plastic waste collection through the Grac App, and scrap dealers will have staff come to their homes to collect. Scrap dealers manage plastic waste collection orders in a visual and accurate way.
  • Creating a Connection between Residents-Scrap Dealers-Brands/Recycling Plants: The Grac App creates an efficient and quick connection between residents, scrap dealers, brands, and recycling plants.
  • Grac’s Saas ERP Software: The Grac company also develops Saas ERP software for government management agencies, collection companies, and scrap dealers.
  • Collection Goal: Grac’s goal by 2030 is to collect 589,500 tons of plastic waste.
  • Waste Sorting Guide: The Grac application guides residents on how to sort waste at source.
  • Schedule Bulky Waste Collection: After customers schedule bulky waste collection, the data will be sent to collection units, scrap dealer networks, waste collection partners, and data information will be sent to Ward People’s Committee and District People’s Committee for monitoring and supervision.

The Grac company has set a goal of collecting 589,500 tons of plastic waste by 2030 based on the following factors:

Plastic Waste Situation in Vietnam: According to the World Bank’s 2022 report, plastic waste is becoming one of the biggest challenges that countries are facing. In Vietnam, it is estimated that about 3.1 million tons of plastic waste are discharged on land each year; the amount of waste dumped into the ocean ranges from 0.28 to 0.73 million tons. Vietnam has become one of the major sources of plastic waste in the world.

Demand for Plastic Waste Recycling: Of the plastic waste, only about 27% is recycled and utilized by facilities and businesses. This shows that the handling and recycling of plastic waste still has many limitations.

Development of Technology: With the development of technology applications, notably Grac, it will contribute to bringing effective solutions to the status of waste collection and recycling.

Sustainable Development Goals: The goal of collecting 589,500 tons of plastic waste by 2030 is also in line with Grac’s sustainable development strategy, aiming to reduce the impact on the environment and raise consumer awareness and responsibility for the environment.

Grac has updated their software with data for 600,000 households, 30,000 waste sources in 150 localities (wards/communes). However, specific information about the number of cities with Grac’s collection network is not clearly provided. It is expected that by the beginning of 2024, Grac will digitize 1.5 million households, 100,000 waste sources, and 300 localities in Ho Chi Minh City.
