Grac’s modern plastic waste collection model

Grac’s modern plastic waste collection model

Vietnam’s Grac app has developed a pioneering plastic waste collection model. Here’s how it works:

  1. Users take photos of plastic waste : Users will take photos of the plastic waste they want to collect.
  2. Upload photo to app : After taking photo, user will upload photo to Grac app.
  3. Organizations come to collect : Based on information from the photo, organizations will come to collect plastic waste.
  4. Schedule plastic waste collection via Grac app : Users can schedule plastic waste collection via Grac app.
  5. Focus on clean plastic waste collection : Grac is focusing on clean plastic waste collection.

Currently, Grac has 1,000,000 participating households, collecting more than 365 tons of plastic waste. Grac is testing scrap yards in District 3, Go Vap, Tan Binh with a population of one million. According to calculations, the amount of PET plastic collected every day is about one ton.

The Grac application not only helps transform waste management, but also brings many other benefits to the environment and society. This application contributes to raising awareness and responsibility of consumers towards the environment, thereby encouraging them to reduce the use of disposable plastic products, classify waste at source, and participate in plastic waste collection and recycling programs.

Grac’s plastic waste collection model offers several new and different points compared to traditional models:

  1. Connecting people directly with waste collectors : Through the Grac app, people can directly connect with scrap collectors, scrap yards and recycling plants.
  2. Take a photo and upload it to the app : People take photos of plastic waste and upload them to the app. Waste collection organizations will then use this information to optimize their collection routes.
  3. Schedule plastic waste collection via Grac app: People can schedule plastic waste collection easily and quickly via Grac app.
  4. Focus on collecting clean plastic waste: Grac is focusing on collecting clean plastic waste. Clean plastic waste is used plastic products that are not contaminated with dirt such as grease, food, drinking water, etc.
  5. Creating many benefits for the environment and society : Grac application not only helps to transform waste management, but also brings many other benefits to the environment and society. This application contributes to raising awareness and responsibility of consumers towards the environment.

The subjects of Grac’s plastic waste collection model include:

  1. State management agencies : Including Provincial People’s Committee, Department of Natural Resources and Environment, District/County People’s Committee, Ward/Commune People’s Committee

Does Vietnam have a plan to recycle plastic?

Vietnam is taking many measures to reduce plastic waste:

  1. Directive No. 33/CT-TTg of the Prime Minister : Strengthening management, reuse, recycling, treatment and reduction of plastic waste.
  2. USAID-funded Reducing Plastic Pollution with Local Solutions Project : Supporting three cities to develop and implement action plans to reduce plastic pollution.
  3. Target of 70% plastic recycling by 2025 : To achieve this target, Vietnam will need to recycle about 1.5 million tons of plastic per year.

Specific solutions include: Roadmap to limit the production and import of single-use plastic products, non-biodegradable plastic packaging and products and goods containing microplastics; promote environmentally friendly alternative materials, limit products containing microplastics and control the import of plastic scrap; extended producer responsibility (EPR); source sorting and collection of waste fees by volume.
